Job description

We are seeking a Research Technician with extensive experience in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology and analytical techniques. The successful applicant will be expected to work in close collaboration with PhD students, senior scientists and to support the supervision and teaching of BSc and MSc students.

Your duties
  • play a constructive and responsible role in the daily management of the cell culture laboratories of the Division of Molecular and Computational Toxicology;
  • maintenance of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), differentiation of iPSC to specific tissue targets;
  • management of cell culture consumables, resources and plasticware including responsibilities for ordering;
  • plan experimental procedures and execute specific experimental tasks;
  • management and maintenance of laboratory equipment;
  • instruct and support PhD and MSc students in their experimental work;
  • support teaching staff in MSc and BSc supervision and practical courses.


  • a qualification in laboratory skills, i.e. Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs or equivalent
  • demonstrated hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, preferably with iPSC;
  • experience with molecular and biochemical techniques, including immunostaining, Western Blotting, (q)PCR, high content imaging (advantage), LC-MS (advantage);
  • strong communication, organizational and social skills;
  • high competence in either English or Dutch is an absolute requirement (both are preferred);
  • team player with the ability to work independently;
  • strong motivation for scientific research;
  • teaching experience (advantage)

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,579 and a maximum €3,445 (scale 8), depending on your education and experience. The job profile (onderwijs en onderzoeksmedewerker 3)  is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension. Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

Division of Molecular and Computational Toxicology
Molecular and Computational Toxicology ( is part of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Science). Within Molecular and Computational Toxicology research is specialised in developing computational and in vitro (non-animal) based strategies for the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of chemical-induced toxicity in order to better predict chemical safety in humans.
The laboratory is specialised in analytical chemistry, cell culture, toxicity determination and omic analysis. In vitro models include human primary cells, human cell lines and induced human Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) derived cells.The section is also involved in education within the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Natural Sciences and Biomolecular Sciences at VU University Amsterdam.
