Job descriptionWe offer the position of a junior researcher and lecturer in patient involvement and inclusive collaborations in health care and research. The Athena Institute’s research programme aims to contribute to the improvement of health and well-being in a sustainable and equitable way by studying and designing inclusive, multi-stakeholder, innovation processes. The way (public) organisations are able to respond to changes in their environment and take part in, and accommodate, inclusive innovation processes is of growing importance and an expanding area of research.
You will contribute to three research projects which all aim to realise more patient centered health care or research. Their approaches differ. One research project aims to realise more impactful health research via the involvement of patients in research agenda setting. The other research projects study and facilitate change within health (and welfare) organisations towards more client centeredness. To realise this, we support them to enhance the reflexive capacity of the teams and professionals through interactive evaluation methodologies. All research should be considered in the light of system innovation and transition management. There are possibilities to start a PhD track when functioning is excellent.
The position involves contributing to this research area for 50% of the time and teaching in various courses offered by the Athena Institute for the other 50%.
The teaching activities are part of courses and programs coordinated by the Athena Institute on a variety of subjects of management and policy in the field of health and life sciences. The language of instruction is English.
- applying interactive monitoring and evaluation methodologies and designing and facilitating focus groups discussions and reflection sessions as part of change processes in health organisations or research institutions
- teaching the wide variety of courses offered by the Athena Institute which include workgroup coaching, assisting in course coordination and daily supervision of students during their internships in the research project of the candidate
- a MSc degree (GPA>7,5), preferably with knowledge in the field of system innovation, science & technology studies, patient involvement, organisational change (including communities of practice, reflective practitioners), knowledge co-creation or other fields that show an integrated social sciences and natural sciences background
- preferably have expertise in both qualitative and participatory research methods and be open to transdisciplinary research work
- a team player
- teaching experience
- fluent in Dutch and English in word and speech
What are we offering?A challenging position in a socially involved organisation. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of € 2.709,- and a maximum of € 4.274,- in accordance with salary scale 10, based on full-time employment and depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0,8 FTE.
The appointment will initially be for a period of one year with a possible extension conditional upon assessment of adequate functioning.

How to organise an inclusive multi-stakeholder innovation process which contributes to solving complex societal challenges? This requires an understanding of the dynamics within and between science and society; methodologies (principles and heuristics) that can guide inclusive multi-stakeholder innovation processes; strategies that can sustain and upscale such processes; methodologies to monitor and evaluate such innovation processes; as well as approaches to train students and professionals in these methodologies.
