Job descriptionThe postdoc researcher will be part of the European Research Council (ERC) project “Righting the Wrongs, A Life Course Dynamics Approach for Non-Standard Employment (DYNANSE)”, which studies how non-standard employment shapes labour market inequalities. The project develops a method to produce error-corrected employment trajectories and applies it in the study of the careers of workers with non-standard employment contracts. For this purpose, it uses register and survey data from the Netherlands, Italy and Norway. The successful candidate will work on the substantial part of the project and bridge labour market theories with the empirical analysis of large datasets. (S)he will work in a group of PhD candidates and faculty members with diverse backgrounds including sociology, economics and survey methodology. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the National Statistical Institutes of the Netherlands (CBS), Italy (Istat) and Norway (SSB).
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented researcher. The successful candidate needs to be an expert in labour market theories as well as proficient in longitudinal data analysis, and preferably has also experience in the analysis of sequence data or Latent Variable Modelling.
- Carry out research on the role of non-standard employment for the ERC project “Righting the Wrongs. A Life Course Dynamics Approach for Non-Standard Employment”
- Conduct high-quality research in the field of labour sociology, illustrated by international publications, presentations in conferences and communication of research results to the wider public.
- Support ‘open science’ and work in a reproducible way and share tools and data with the wider scientific community
- Be an active member of the ERC project team and co-supervise the PhD candidates of the project
- Take an active role in the collaboration with the National Statistical Institutes that are part of the ERC project. The successful candidate should be willing to spend a small number of months of her/his appointment abroad
- (optional) Teach courses in Sociology or Statistics and Methodology in courses of the curricula of the Faculty of Social Sciences
- Excellent training (PhD) in social sciences, economics, or a related quantitative/computational field
- Good knowledge of quantitative research methods, preferably sequence analysis or Latent Variable Modelling
- Examples of academic service in (inter)national contexts. Familiarity with register data and experience in collaboration with National Statistical Institutes will be considered an asset
- Excellent oral and written command of English. In case of taking the teaching option, non-Dutch speakers should be also willing to learn Dutch within 2 years
- Team spirit and good communication skills
What are we offering?A challenging position in a socially engaged organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,709 (scale 10) and a maximum of €4274 (scale 10), depending on your educational level and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.
The appointment will initially be for 1 year, with a possibility to extend for another 3 years. The successful candidate has the option of taking also some light teaching tasks (80% research, 20% teaching). In this case, the appointment will extend to 5 years.

About the department, institute, project
The department of Sociology hosts over 50 fte of academic staff and organizes the bachelor and master education in sociology, as well as courses in methodology in the Faculty of Social Sciences (https://fsw.vu.nl/nl/index.aspx). The research of the department is organized in the research program Participation in Society (PARIS), that includes five theme groups: ‘Social Context of Aging’, ‘Social Inequality in the Life-course’, ‘Identity, Diversity and Inclusion’, ‘Social Conflict and Change’ and ‘Philanthropic Studies’.
About the project
Righting the Wrongs, A Life Course Dynamics Approach for Non-Standard Employment (DYNANSE)
This project studies how non-standard employment (NSE) shapes labour market inequalities by trying to resolve the question of whether NSE leads to prosperous or precarious careers. To achieve this aim, it brings three important innovations: 1) it follows a processual approach by studying how NSE affects whole employment trajectories instead of looking at point-in-time events, 2) it develops an integrative framework on the role of NSE by assessing how dynamic micro (individual career-choices), meso (organisational dynamics) and macro (institutional change) factors determine why NSE leads to prosperous or precarious careers, 3) to assess properly the role of NSE it corrects for measurement error. The postdoc project focusses on institutional change and studies how labour market reforms within the recent Great Recession in the three countries of interest (the Netherlands, Italy and Norway) determine employment careers and moderate the role of individual career-choices and organisational dynamics.
This project is embedded in the ‘Social Inequality and the Life Course (SILC)’ research group of the department of Sociology. The SILC group (led by dr. Pavlopoulos) studies inclusion and exclusion in socio-economic distribution processes (education, labour) from a life course perspective. The group’s approach is strongly quantitative, and its members are experts in statistical modelling. It consists of several researchers from the VU, the CBS and
the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI), such as Harry Ganzeboom and Aat Liefbroer.
